Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme with a bookish (what else?) inclination: each week the prompt encourages us to look through our books to find those who fulfill its specifications – or to give our results an unexpected spin. Previously created by The Broke and the Bookish, Top Ten Tuesday is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where you will also find the list of future topics.
This week’s prompt is….
BOOKS ON MY FALL 2019 TBR
Confession time: no matter how much I try to give myself a schedule of books to read, so that I can achieve some kind of balance between the new books being published and those that have been long languishing on my TBR, I’m painfully aware that I’m far too easily distracted…. Nonetheless, I want to give this a try, and see if I can manage to stick to my promise.
One of the fantasy series that has been accumulating dust on my virtual shelf is Joe Abercrombie’s First Law Trilogy, a grimdark saga which has received enthusiastic reviews. Now that the first book in the sequel trilogy Age of Madness is out, and now that I’ve read and enormously enjoyed it, I want – or rather need – to… go back in history, so the first three books of my Fall TBR are THE BLADE ITSELF, BEFORE THEY ARE HANGED and LAST ARGUMENT OF KINGS.
Then of course there is the third and final chapter of Jay Kristoff’s saga The Nevernight Chronicles, DARKDAWN: it’s already sitting on my e-reader and I’m eager to see how this story of bloody revenge will wrap up.
Series are going to feature heavily in this post, and one of my top favorites is Seanan McGuire’s October Daye: the thirteenth volume, THE UNKINDEST TIDE was published recently and I know this will be one of the first fall books I will read, because I’m a huge Toby fan…
Last year, one of my best new discoveries was Fonda Lee’s Jade City, first volume in her Green Bone Saga, an intriguing combination of magic and martial arts. Book 2, JADE WAR came out not long ago and I’ve been eyeing it with growing curiosity.
The same goes for R.F. Kuang’s THE DRAGON REPUBLIC, book 2 of The Poppy War: if you missed that one, I strongly encourage you to read it because of its powerful writing and intriguing characterization.
FLEET OF KNIVES is the second book in Gareth Powell’s Embers of War series, following the amazing first book with the same title: in this case it’s science fiction featuring intergalactic wars and sentient ships. What more could I ask for?
And last but not least, I need to start reading Mary Robinette Kowal’s new SF works, THE CALCULATING STARS (which just won the Hugo) and THE FATED SKY: her fantasy Glamourists Series was a delightful discovery, and I’m curious to sample Kowal’s writing in science fiction.
Will I be able to keep my promises to myself? Only time will tell…. 🙂
I also have to read Jade War… I started it, but had to put it down because of some ARCs I had scheduled.

It’s painful to have to make such choices, indeed…

This is an awesome list, and I love all the sequels and series you’ve added. I personally still need to read Jade City, so thank you for reminding me😁

Well, the positive side of it is that you can read them back to back… 🙂

I can’t believe I still haven’t gotten to The Dragon Republic. That one and Harp of Kings by Marillier are my top two anticipated reads for 2019 and I haven’t read either yet, lol!

Same here… I guess it’s time for the book lover sad mantra: too many books, too little time!
Followed by the mandatory deep sigh of regret… 🙂

I need to check out Embers of War and The Poppy War! Plus, I wonder if I ever get so far in October Daye series to read the thirteenth installment 😉 I hope you like Jade War; I read Jade City and wasn’t taken with it, so I won’t be continuing with the series.

Granted that I’m just a tiny bit biased toward Toby Daye, I hope that once you get to the more intriguing books, you will feel compelled to read as many of them as you can fit in your schedule… 🙂

I still have a sample of ‘Jade City’ on my Kindle! One day I get to it 😁
‘The Dragon Republic was pretty good I thought. I hope you like it as well!
Never got into Abercrombie, I dnf ‘The Blade Itself’ and never picked up any more of his works. I’m curious to see what you think of him!

I loved the first book I read from Abercrombie, Best Served Cold, and I’ve now learned that it’s part of the same world as the First Law trilogy, so I have little doubt I will enjoy the others as well . 🙂

This is a fantastic fall TBR. Loved The Calculating Stars. I’m also hoping to squeeze The First Law trilogy in this fall.

After reading A Little Hatred, I have this burning need to read the First Law and get to know better some of the characters mentioned in the latest book! 🙂

That makes me feel even more like I need to find a way to cram them in somewhere!

I love the look of the Gareth Powell book – and somehow that has escaped my radar! And yes… I have The Calculating Stars on my TBR, too. I hope you get through the list and enjoy reading these choices, Maddalena. It’s a really good idea!

For the Gareth Powell series you need to read Embers of War first! 🙂
I know you don’t mind jumping into mid-series books, but in this case I would strongly recommend starting from the beginning… 😉

What a great list. I love your idea of going back to the earlier Abercrombie books. I’ve been thinking of doing the same – October is a bit too packed but I’m kind of hoping December and January will be much quieter and I might pack in some of my own reads. Maybe Abercrombie and Pratchett.

I’ve tried to “nudge” myself toward starting the First Law trilogy by adding The Blade Itself to my e-reader: seeing it every time I hit the “home” icon should help me remember my own promises… 😉

I am currently reading Darkdawn and loving it (of course!) and I have finished the First Law Trilogy at the beginning of this month and really loved it, so I hope you would enjoy it too!
And I have to go back to Toby Dayes series because I am a little behind with that series and I am sooo sad about it!

Darkdawn will be one of my next reads: I have this burning need to see how Kristoff wraps it all up – although I’m sure there will be a lot of blood… 😀

Hahahah funny that you mention Jade War here when I just talked about Fonda Lee’s books in my last comment! 😛 I need to pick up R.F. Kuang’s sequel too. Hope you get the chance to read all of these soon! 😉

So do I… There is the book lover mantra to be aware of, though: too many books, too little time!
(((SIGH))) . 🙂
