In previous Wyrd and Wonder iterations there were many prompts and challenges that I could not fulfill for lack of time, so this year I decided to go back to some of them and try my hand at the… roads not taken. One of the most interesting ones required to list five favored books and to describe them in five words: it proved far more challenging than I could have imagined, but it helped me focus on what I truly loved in those stories and that’s one of the reasons I chose series openers that introduced me to authors who became my favorites after one single book.
1) Dreamer’s Pool (Blackthorn & Grim #1), by Juliet Marillier
Spellbinding tale: adversity and renewal
2) Age of Assassins (The Wounded Kingdom #1), by R.J. Barker
Damaging magic, knives and shadows
3) A Time of Dread (Of Blood and Bone #1), by John Gwynne
Darkness falls: Truth and Courage
4) Sins of Empire (Gods of Blood and Powder #1), by Brian McClellan
Vlora Flint, Mad Ben Styke
5) The Tethered Mage (Swords and Fire #1), by Melissa Caruso
New magic: Falcons, Falconers, jesses
And now it’s your turn: I challenge you all to describe five of your beloved books in five words! 😉
Impressive! I’m not sure I could use only 5 works for some of my favorite books. I’d say this W&W is off to a great start for you…

It was not easy, since I tend to be something of a chatterbox in my reviews… 😉

Great fun feature! I don’t if I’d be able to do it though, I tend to go on and on in my reviews because sometimes mere words just can’t describe how I feel, especially about my favorite five star reads 🙂

That was the challenge indeed, to be able to find the five defining words for those books and yes, it was far from easy… 😉

Yay, this was fab! 😀
I still have to read all five of your choices! (hangs head in shame)
I’m posting my attempt on Monday.

Looking forward to your list! And there is no need to feel ashamed: remember the book lover’s mantra – “too many books, too little time”… 😉

You did an amazing job! For me it would be impossible, but reading your post was fun and it made me want to read all of the books you have mentioned more! I have read only Age of Assassins but I have all the others on my TBR. I really hope to read them, sooner or later!

As I’m fond of saying, books are patient creatures and can wait for us to get to them – and they never get stale… 😉

This idea is at the same time very cool and very daunting! 😉 I think I will stay on the sidelines and cheer you on 😉

Thanks! But still, think about giving it a try… No pressure of course! 😉

Ooo… this looks like fun! I know how hard this is, cos how much I have to sweat over my blurbs and straplines for my own books… I’ll see if I can have a go – maybe Himself can give me a hand!

Even though it did prove a challenge, this list was fun to write, so I can only encourage you to try 🙂

I have two in the works and I love seeing how others approach it. I do really need to start on Brian McClellan.

McClellan writes a different kind of fantasy, and a very engrossing tale. Happy reading! 🙂

I just finished a re-read of The Tethered Mage today and loved it just as much the second time round. Age of Assassins is on my TBR for Wyrd & Wonder too 😀
